The passion for collecting united Hans, Emmy and Wolfgang Klocker. When he was still a student, Wolfgang laid the foundations for a collection by purchasing works by befriended Tyrolean artists. After her son’s early death, in 1974, and the death of her husband, in 1981, Emmy Klocker fought for his legacy for years, won and with a great passion began to acquire Austrian post-war art. She bought what appealed to her, with a great instinct, but without a programme. By and by the idea for her collection took shape, which should honour her son’s and husband’s memory in a museum.
The cornerstones of this collection are testimony to the attempt to bring together the best of Tyrolean contemporary painting and sculpture in an Austrian context. Female positions remained, as was typical for the time, in the background. Since the founder’s own death, in 2006, the collection has been systematically extended and obvious gaps filled. The focus is Tyrol, the context Austria, the horizon international.
With The Art of Collecting – Part I the Klocker Museum extends a first invitation to explore the collection’s potentials.
