He studied at the Kramsach College for Art and Design and at the University of Innsbruck. In his work, Ortner condenses fragments of thought into enigmatic messages. Humorous as well as profound, he plays with the dynamics of form and content, with the connection between text and image. He often uses book covers as image carriers and does not only deal aesthetically with the interaction between literature and visual arts, but also uses it according to the "modular principle". He works with quotations, interweaves his own thoughts with those of Georg Trakl in his “written” pictures or lists code-like lists of the books he has read within a year.
